Ultrathin Laptops Offer Affordable Power and Ease
FIVE years ago, a laptop an inch thick and weighing four pounds cost $2,000. Today the same type of laptop, but thinner, lighter and lasting longer on a single charge, is available for as little as $399. And there's even more good news for those interested in buying a lightweight computer at a low price.
Netbooks popular, affordable mini-laptops with 10-inch screens are intended primarily for reaching the Internet to check e-mail or Web sites. But in the last year, computer manufacturers have pushed out new laptops with similar attributes. Called "thin and lights" or "ultrathins," the new systems are similar to netbooks: they are lighter than a bag of groceries, provide more than five hours of battery life and won't strain a budget, yet they pack more power than netbooks and 12- or 13-inch screens.
"For $50 to $100 more than a netbook, you can own a computer that meets all your needs, instead of investing in just a secondary system," says Mark Spoonauer, editor in chief of Laptop Magazine.
Major PC manufacturers, including Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and Asus, continue to market netbooks along with a newer generation of ultrathin products. The choice comes down to personal requirements, especially power needs.
As a gift, say, for a recent graduate, any of the following netbooks or ultrathins under $800 should serve well.
H.P. PAVILION DM3 The Hewlett-Packard Pavilion DM3 starts at $499, but the aluminum-housed ultrathin looks and feels luxurious. The company's new design has a brushed metal cover that doesn't attract fingerprints, and it plays a card from Apple's MacBook line with its "island" keyboard the term refers to the significant space between each key. The inch-thick laptop fits in a shoulder bag and, weighing slightly more than four pounds, isn't uncomfortable to carry.(HP Pavilion dv6000 battery)
To achieve thinner dimensions, most ultrathins and netbooks lack DVD drives. But this laptop can download high-definition movies from iTunes or Amazon.com and play them back on either the 13.3-inch display or on a larger HDTV by using the onboard H.D.M.I. port. Ideal for the highly mobile student, it has Advanced Micro Device's Athlon II Neo processor, 2 gigabytes of memory, a 320-gigabyte hard drive and Windows 7 Home Premium operating system suitable for light 3-D gaming as well as for writing papers or researching on the Web. H.P. promises up to seven hours of battery life.
LENOVO IDEAPAD U160 Lenovo's ThinkPad line has long included highly mobile laptops for business professionals, but its colorful IdeaPad U Series brings consumers wallet-friendly prices. The U160 has an 11.6-inch screen and is closer in size to a netbook than a regular laptop it is 0.8 inches thick and weighs three pounds. Yet, like the H.P. DM3, it has a healthy number of ports, including an H.D.M.I. for hooking up to a large-screen TV.
Instead of using A.M.D.'s new processors, the $799 U160 is powered by Intel's ultralow voltage processors, which have long outshone the competition in battery life. Available with the latest Core i3 and Core i5 processors, this Windows 7 PC is handy for checking e-mail and Twitter, and can also handle a good amount of processing, including multimedia editing and running programs simultaneously. When equipped with the optional larger capacity battery, the laptop runs about eight hours.
TOSHIBA MINI NB305 Toshiba's Mini NB305 netbook is one of the more handsome and comfortable little laptops around. Despite its diminutive 10.5 inches by 7.6 inches by 1.2 inches about the size of a hardcover book its keyboard is actually quite comfortable. Similarly, the touchpad is wider than most, making it easy to push the cursor around the Windows 7 Starter operating system. Like all netbooks, the $399 Mini NB305 has a 10.1-inch display and includes a number of ports, including U.S.B. jacks and a VGA socket for connecting a larger computer monitor.(Toshiba PA3399U-1BAS battery)
The Mini NB305 is equipped with Intel's low-power Atom processor, a gigabyte of memory and 250 gigabytes of hard drive space. The netbook is perfect for getting on a Wi-Fi network and checking e-mail, reading news sites and doing light chores, like writing a document in Microsoft Word.
Unlike the ultrathins, it cannot play high-definition movies or muster the strength to edit video or pictures. The NB305's six-cell battery provides more than six hours of runtime on a single charge.
ASUS EEE PC 1005PE Asus pioneered the netbook category with its first Eee PC in 2007, and it has built momentum for small computing devices by introducing models in rapid succession. The $360 1005PE is among the best netbooks for travelers because it can stay powered for an entire flight from New York to London on a single charge.(Asus A32-F5 battery)
Its three-pound, trim body also makes it simple to remove from a bag when rushing through security.
While it may not be as attractive as the Toshiba Mini, the Eee PC 1005PE has a 10.1-inch display and includes an Intel Atom processor, a gigabyte of random memory and a 250-gigabyte hard drive for keeping up with basic day-to-day computing tasks.
