Unable To Complete Outlook Express Folder Compaction

Compacting Outlook Express folders can often remove mild corruption

. In versions earlier to Windows XP SP2, the application includes a background compaction feature, which automatically starts compacting the folders whenever the application sits idle. But this can ironically bring corruption to the folders. For this reason, this feature has been removed in the later Windows versions. However, if you observe issues when trying to compact your folders, the reason could be already existing corruption in the folder(s). To repair them, you should use an Outlook Express Repair tool in case no suitable backup is present.

To illustrate such problems, suppose you use Outlook Express and try to compact its folders. The operation fails and you receive an error message mentioned below:

The folder is currently in use by Outlook Express or by another application.

The error message window had two options- 'Ok' and 'Cancel'. The application cannot complete the compaction on clicking either of the two options. Additionally, you may observe that Outlook Express freezes frequently and forces you to close the application using Task Manager.

Explanation

The above error is usually encountered is when Window XP SP2 is installed. Outlook Express automatically starts compacting its folders at 100th time you close the application. This problem can usually be resolved by restarting the system or closing the application that might be accessing the folders.

(1) In other cases, you may receive this error at each exit from the application. In such cases, you can try booting the system in safe mode and then running the defrag utility. You can then boot in normal mode and compact the OE folders manually in offline mode.

(2) Some corruption to Store folder files (*.dbx files) can also cause this issue. This generally occurs due to corruption in Folders.dbx, which manages the other folders. If this is the case, you can locate these files by using Windows file search option (Find or Search) and then rename them. You should repeat this process for each DBX folder to determine the problematic folder-start with Folders.dbx. To extract the lost data out of the folders, a suitable backup or a third-party DBX Repair software is the solution. An Outlook Express Repair Tool uses high-end scanning algorithms to retrieve e-mails from corrupted OE folders.

Stellar Phoenix Outlook Express Recovery is a powerful, yet safe, DBX file repair tool that can repair corrupted OE files created with Outlook Express 5 and 6. It is an advanced Outlook Express Repair software with impressive features and options. The tool can also recover *.eml messages that can be directly viewed in Outlook Express.
