Uncover the Myths Surrounding Acne
Acne is an ailment that has people from all age groups suffering all over the world. Unfortunately, there are so many myths surrounding the causes and cures of acne that it has become extremely difficult to differentiate between the facts and the myths. I would like to shed some light on the myths surrounding acne so that you would be better informed and not follow some wrong ideas.
Myth 1: Acne is infectious/contagious
Stop running away from your friend because he/she has an acne breakout. Under no circumstances can they spread the same to you by sitting next to you or by even touching you. Acne DOES NOT spread by touching someone who has acne. No matter how close you are physically to that person, acne cannot infect you. If you do finally get acne it is not because of your physical proximity to a person suffering from acne but because there was some problem in YOUR body.
Myth 2: Stay away from cosmetics to avoid acne
A few years back this was the truth because all cosmetics were oil-based that invariably made the face greasier and were not suitable for someone already suffering from acne. But in today's time, this logic has been reduced to a myth as there are a large number of water-based cosmetics that do not harm the acne prone skin in any way.
Myth 3: Fried foods and chocolates cause acne
Agreed that fried foods and chocolates may cause a sudden flaring up of acne in some people but they are not the CAUSE for acne. Your cause lies elsewhere. Some foods with sweeteners and saturated fat are best avoided if you are prone to acne breakouts as they may cause inflammation. But they are not the reason for getting acne in the first place. If you have a natural clear skin it would not matter how many fried foods or chocolates you have, but for someone suffering from acne even one helping would make a lot of difference.
Myth 4: Acne is a result of an unclean skin
If you are spending half your time scrubbing your skin clean you are doing more damage to it. Cleanliness of the skin and acne are simply not related to each other. Yes, the dirt, dust, grime etc should be washed off your skin to have a natural clear skin. But all these would never cause acne. If you keep your skin unclean, the quality of your skin would deteriorate but under no circumstances would it lead to acne. On the contrary, for an acne prone skin, too much washing of the face can be harmful. It would make the skin devoid of its natural oils and cause itchiness. The best option would be to take a mild face wash and wash your face 2-3 times a day and pat dry. No scrubbing the skin at all. It could only worsen your acne.
Myth 5: Tanning can make your acne disappear
Tanning has absolutely no relation with acne. You may believe this myth if you wish to fool yourself. The fact is that a tan hides your acne as the skin becomes redder than before and the acne appears to have lessened whereas in reality they have not. Once your tan wears off, the acne would be right there where they were.
