Understanding And Coping With Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders in the world
. They are also the most under-treated. For example about 10% of Australians and 15% of New Zealanders suffer from them. Generally, they are more common among women than men.
Research Findings
Living alone can create stressful circumstances that increase the chances of a person developing anxiety disorders. Therefore, if you are living alone, try as much as possible, to establish around yourself, a network of good and supportive friends. Also, mixing with others for social and community activities such as sporting and entertainment activities alleviates stress. However, if you are already a sufferer, of for example, agoraphobia and social anxiety disorder, you may find mixing with others very hard and stressful. So, you might initially need professional help before you are ready to socialize.
In addition to the above, mind-altering substances, for example tobacco, alcohol and psychoactive drugs like cannabis and marijuana have been linked to anxiety disorders. Therefore, if you are already a sufferer, minimizing alcohol consumption and abstaining from tobacco and illegal drugs may improve your situation.
Also, the hardships we go through in life, such as being widowed, bereaved, divorced or separated, increase our chances of getting anxiety disorders. In order to cope with such hardships, some have joined support groups of people in similar circumstances as them. Support groups provide an environment in which you can share your experiences with others. Through taking part in such groups, you realize that you are not the only one suffering. You learn how your peers are coping and you get comfort.
Treatment of anxiety disorders
Here, you have the following three options:
*use internet-based self-help treatment programs.
*visit a psychologist.
*use medication.
What option to choose is entirely up to you. However, be aware that visiting a psychologist and buying medicines can be expensive. Worse-still, anti-anxiety medicine, may result in side effects. On the other hand, if you choose internet-based self-help therapies carefully, you do not only save loads of money but you can get lasting treatment.
