Understanding Bols

Whenever you ship with a Phoenix delivery service

, you should ask for a BOL if they don't automatically provide you with one. A BOL is a document that is important for all types of shipping. The term actually stands for Bill of Lading, and it is one of the most basic and important documents between yourself and the courier company.

The courier industry is both financially and logistically complex. From your own company's perspective, you need to keep careful shipping records, as well as financial records. All of the required information that you will need in order to update those records properly is contained within the bill of lading.

When shipping internationally, the BOL is not just a good idea, it is an absolute requirement. There are always document requirements that are specific to most shipments, but there are two things which are required no matter which countries you are shipping between, and what you're shipping. The more basic of those is a commercial invoice, which simply lists the pertinent details of the transaction between you and the buyer of your products. The second of those is the Bill of Lading.

Just like an invoice details the agreement that was made between you and the customer, the BOL details the agreement between yourself and the courier company. This includes all of the details which are of interest to the border guards and customs agents, such as where the goods are coming from, and where they are shipping to. Customs have to track the flow of goods being imported into their respective countries, and this document tells them what they need to know.

The information on the bill of lading will contain dates, locations, and financial information. The time and location that your package was picked up will be the first thing, and the destination and projected time of delivery will be next. After that, there will be a brief description of your goods, and their value. Equally important, the amount that you paid for the shipping of those goods will also be listed.

The Bill of Lading is just one of those tools that customs agents use to make sure that their local laws are being followed. They might see that you need a certain import license, for example, based on the information contained in the document. Without a BOL, it is possible that your order could be held at a border, so check that your courier remembers it.
