Understanding Capture -video Editing Abcs
Video editing involves gathering your raw footage of digital videos and transforming them into enjoyable professional-style movies
. Once you are sure you have the necessary equipment including a digital recording device such as a hand held camcorder or a smart phone, a desktop or laptop computer, and video editing software, you are ready to begin!
The very first step to understand with video editing is the capture of raw footage from the digital video recording camera to the hard drive on your computer. Basically, you need to get your unedited amateur film onto a platform that will allow you to apply and use all the fancy editing tools available to you with your video editing software. You capture or transmit the film by connecting the filming device via a FireWire connector. One end goes into a port on the recording device and the other into an input port on the computer.
This step requires a bit of planning. What type of film are you making? Is it a short montage of your childs soccer game to share with friends and family or a professional video with informational content to educate others? Depending on the type of movie will determine this next step in the process. Basically, you need to have a sense of how big this film in terms of file size will need. Video footage is usually an extremely large file size compared to other files stored on your hard drive. Typically 3 minutes of film is equal to about 1 Gigabyte. Some software used in video editing will have a file size limit. If you know you are making a short film, you will likely be able to just download the raw footage in its entirety. If you are working on a larger project, you may need to breakdown your video into multiple smaller shots, which alone are not too large and will be file sizes below the limit. With this method, each shot is a different file. There are software programs, such as DV GateMotion, that can assist you in this capturing process. The software makes breaking each shot into a workable size simple and easy.
Once you have downloaded or captured the raw footage of your film, you are ready to work with the video in your video editing software. You can set clips where you want to begin, usually labeled IN, and place a clip where you want the film to end, labeled OUT. Then simply drag the clip into the timeline. The timeline lets you order the clips in any sequence that you want. This will let you create a seamless and smooth film. If you are using audio and someone is speaking during your clips, be sure to have a few seconds on each end of silence so that you have some video editing wiggle room.
Once you have figured out how to capture your video by downloading onto your hard drive and getting the larger raw footage into smaller clips that are easier to work with using video editing software, you have mastered the very first step of video editing.
