Understanding Care Label On Clothes

Clean and bright clothes make you look smarter and more approachable to other people

. Though there are only a few steps in washing clothes, not every clothes taken out from the washing machine is clean and bright. The biggest problem lies with the correct method of washing your clothes.

Take a look at your clothes and you will find a care label or tag. There are several symbols on the tag that tell you how you should wash your clothes. Basically, the symbols can be grouped into 9 categories. They are machine wash cycle, water temperature, tumble dry cycle, heat setting, special instructions, bleach symbols, iron-dry or steam, dry-clean normal cycle and special dry clean instructions. This article will introduce some of them to you.

Machine wash cycle symbols are printed as a liquid filled cup or container, which we call the basic symbol. The basic symbol represents the requirement of normal or regular settings of spinning. Sometimes, you may find one or two lines printed under the basic symbol. The one with one line means wrinkle resistant washer setting and the double lines mean gentle settings. A hand touching the water inside the container means the clothes can only be hand washed. A big cross on the basic symbol means no wash is required.

The other common care symbol is tumble dry cycle. There is always a square for this category of symbols. If there is only a square, it means the clothes can be machine dry. If there is a circle inside the square, it means normal settings can be used. When there are two lines under the square, gentle or delicate settings should be chosen. If there is a big cross on the square, you should not tumble dry your clothes.

Ironing symbols are also important as too much heat from the iron can cause damages to fabric. Ironing instructions are indicated by an iron-like symbol. With the iron symbol appears on the tag, it means your clothes require ironing. You may find 1 to 3 dots inside the iron symbols. The more the dots, the higher temperature setting should be used. With a cross on the iron symbol, it means you should not iron or press your clothes with heat.

Sometimes, I leave food stains onto my loving clothes and I use bleach to remove them. For different kind of fabric, different kind of bleach may be required. Bleach symbols are in the shape of a triangle. You can use all kinds of bleach if you see a plain triangle on the care label. But, you can only choose the non-chlorine one if you find 2 lines inside a triangle. You should not use any bleach if you find a cross on a black triangle. The general rule is not to use bleach for dark color clothes.
