The medical industry is responsible for safeguarding all manner of information

All of this information needs to be readily available to medical providers, but it must be protected from other parties who might try to put that information to a nefarious use. The entities that must adhere to HIPAA rules include healthcare providers, such as doctors, chiropractors, pharmacies, dentists, psychologists and nursing homes. However, health plans must also be in HIPAA compliance health insurance companies, HMOs, government healthcare plans and company health plans all fall under this heading. Finally, a healthcare clearinghouse must also be in compliance with HIPAA rules. These are third party companies and organizations that process personal and financial information in regards to health.

How do you ensure that you have chosen a provider that is in compliance with HIPAA regulations? First, if you will be speaking with the provider in person, ask to see their credentials. Asking this question upfront ensures that you know your information is safe with your medical provider. Second, you can always check the provider's website. Usually, these providers will place a notice on their website stating that they adhere to HIPAA practices, as this is a positive thing in the eyes of their patients and customers.

HIPAA compliance in a healthcare provider ensures that you are able to have peace of mind about the safety of your medical and financial information. All forms of information, including written, electronic and even oral, are protected under the federal Privacy Rule. HIPAA regulations are designed to ensure that this rule remains in place and that your privacy is respected at all times.
