Understanding Health Care Reform In Ohio

It would be quite surprising if you still did not know that the Supreme Court passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

. The Act will take effect January 1, 2012 and by that date all Americans are expected to have Ohio health insurance. This decision that was made on June 28th, 2012 will change the lives of many Americans. This is what will now be put into effect:

Starting January 1, 2014 all individuals in the United States must have health insurance. If they do not they will be charged a tax. One of the reasons that this law has been so controversial among the people in this country is that some people see the tax as a penalty where others see it as a tax. It would be unconstitutional if the government made the people pay a penalty, so to avoid confusion the act has been declared a tax.

The Supreme Court passed the Act with 5 members ruling for it and 4 against it. Those who were against it wanted to rule out the act as a whole not just part of it. There was only one section of the Affordable Care Act that did not pass, and that was the section about Medicaid. States must expand their Medicaid coverage and if they do not than the federal government can discontinue it.

Another change in the Act is about pre-existing conditions. If you were denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition and could therefore not receive Ohio health insurance you will benefit from the Act. Starting in 2014 you will not be able to be denied coverage from the insurance providers because of any pre-existing condition. Also plans will be starting to require preventative care. So not only will your previous condition be taken care of, but now there will be more doctor visits covered, helping you keep a good eye on your health and prevent other medical conditions.

Before the Affordable Care Act was passed there was a limit on how much money could be spent toward each persons Ohio health insurance in a given year. Now there is absolutely no limit to the amount of care you will be receiving. You will receive care until you are as healthy as possible no limitations because of finances.

As you can see there will be a lot of changes taking place before January 1, 2014. Some of these changes have already been in effect, such as, those under the age of 26 able to be on their parents insurance. The section of the law allowing them to be on their parents plan has already been in effect and will continue to be, now that the Act has passed. If you do not already have Ohio Health Insurance now is a great time to purchase a plan, before the premiums start to rise.
