You can meet people and connect with them in these groups and then you can connect with them on your profile once you have gotten to know them. That is okay. However, there is a much more formal process of getting to know people on LinkedIn. You have to be more careful about it because you can get yourself in a position where you can't connect with people again.
One of the things to remember with these social networking sites, and this is very important to remember; you are playing in other people's sandboxes. While these are all very powerful, you can never forget that you're playing in somebody else's sandbox and you must follow their rules.
Even if you do follow their rules they can still yank the rug out from under you and there is not much you can do about it. Follow the rules, but also try and diversify as much as possible.
LinkedIn could go under tomorrow for whatever reason. There are some paid versions of it, but they could decide maybe they are running in the red and go belly up tomorrow and then what? They could decide they want to change it and only be a site for people who play guitar. It's their decision. You have to know that going in. You have to follow their rules, abide with what they want and know that even doing all that, the rules may change. That's just the way it is.
Don't worried about that, but when you know that, you will look at this more strategically. Knowing full well that you are playing in somebody else's sandbox with the connections that you make, you want to strive to transcend any social networking platform. For instance, the people, connections and friends you make should go beyond Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
