Understanding Search Engine Page Ranking!

Understanding Search Engine Page Ranking!

We've all heard about the Google Page Ranking system and how complex it is for anyone to understand how Google, Yahoo and Bing ranks pages and how these results are determined. Page ranking is important and any marketer you listen to will have some ideas that may have worked for them in the past that they want to recommend. There are differences in opinion by those who call themselves experts in this matter and as users we all must be cautious of how much trust we can put in these individuals especially if they don't have a track record of successful promotions that you can review and verify. Real time results are vitally important for your satisfaction and validation of their success.

Let's talk for a moment about what is this page ranking number that Google uses and is it important? The Google page rank is a patented algorithm and is comprised of over a half billion variables used to determine a page ranking when a query is made. No one knows what all of these variables are not even the person who oversee the codes. Anyone claiming to be an expert in page ranking should be viewed as suspect immediately.

There are some things we do know about page ranking and how they work. Google admits that pages they feel are important will be blessed with a higher page rank than others. This is not always the case because you'll find that some sites may have a ranking of 7 will appear lower than some of those sites that have a ranking of 5. I've never talked to anyone who can explain why! Google sees links on a site which acts like a "vote" for other pages. We don't have the time or room available in this article to get into the technical aspects of page ranking, so it's going to require you to do some searching and study on your own if you want to understand all the technical stuff. I don't personally want to know because it's not that important to me!

A good example of how linking plays a role in this process would be that if a highly ranked page links to your website, you will get more "weight" out of that site by the search engines than when a friend with no page rank links to your site.

Most experts have determined that back links from dot gov and dot edu sites have more "weighted" links than some of the other top level domains because of restriction they impose and possibly that they are a not for profit status. One way to get dot edu links is to take out an online ad in a college newspaper site. Posting in a college newspaper may not be important to your business, so you may never revert to using this method for getting links.

As a rule of thumb, any links from a PR 2 or higher will probably help your page rank. One popular way to get links is to post comments on websites, blogs, forum and article directories that have a decent page rank. Make sure that Google "follows" the links on those pages before you waste a lot of your time on posting to those entities.

Since you can't afford to spend a lot of time on researching every aspect of the half billion points of the Google algorithm my suggestion would be to funnel your efforts on the things that we do know that works in the search engine optimization process that most consultants and successful webmaster use on a daily basis anyway.

Promotion tactics which include joining and posting to forums and include your links works extremely well. Submit to sites that have an article or link directory connected with their site. With each directory that accepts your post you will have a better chance of being listed higher in Google and other fine search engines. Having your own directory is even more powerful as we discussed in yesterdays article.

Post to as many ezine article publications as possible. Publish your articles on article sites is a tremendous way to drive traffic to your site. Create a sitemap on your website. This will aid the search engines when the robots come to spider your sites.

Continue to build new pages within your site and put links within your pages, back linking is important, cross linking to other pages of your website is also very powerful. Each and every page you create and link back to your home page increases the strength of your home page with the search engines.

These are just a few of the really important issues you must address on a regular basis if you want to build your web sites popularity and gain those page ranks you feel you deserve. There are many other aspects of optimization that are too lengthy to mention in the article.
