Optical fibers are thin and flexible transparent glass pipes that carry light. They are used in fiber optic communication as they are superior to metal fibers because of their lower rate of data loss and immunity to magnetic disturbance. Two types of optic fibers, singlemode and multimode fibers, are used in fiber optic communication. Singlemode fibers (SMF) or monomode fibers can carry only a single ray of light, while multimode fibers can carry more than one light ray at a time.

The total diameter of singlemode and multimode fibers is around 125m. Singlemode fibers have a smaller core of about 9 microns compared with multimode fibers, which have much larger core of about 50m. As singlemode fibers carry only a single light signal, they are more focused and are useful for high precision applications such as scientific research. They are capable of travelling longer distances as well, up to 50 times more than multimode fibers. Singlemode fibers can carry Gigabit Ethernet for more than 10 kilometers and are preferred for long distance transmissions. Singlemode fibers also retain fidelity better than multimode fibers. They also have higher bandwidth and offer faster data transmission.

Singlemode fibers are suitable for long distance telecom applications featuring diode based equipment. Due to their small core, coupling light into these fibers needs higher precision, but this is now possible. Single-mode fibers are used in applications that cover large distances such as telephone signals, including those covering great distances between cities and countries.
