Understanding The Person With An Alcohol Addiction
Many people don't understand alcohol addiction
. Even some alcoholics don't fully understand what alcohol addiction is and all it entails until they are finally able to admit they have a problem with drink.
Most people in society belief that alcohol addiction is a social problem. What many don't realise is that it is an illness. It's a disease which can lead to fatal consequences if ignored. Yet it is probably one of the biggest drain on national health resources.
Alcohol addiction is growing more and more common in our society today. Addicts do not understand or simply ignore the negative consequences that comes from their drinking. They refuse or feel helpless to recognise the problems they are creating for their family, friends or work colleagues by having this illness. The alcohol becomes the most important thing in their lives and can lead to job loss and financial ruin in some cases. Even the most highly respected, well educated person can lose everything by having an alcohol addiction. This illness effects anyone and everyone from any walk of life. It is not restricted to one social class. The problem is so widespread across the world that effects millions of people.
There are some addicts who don't realise they have a problem or simply turn a blind eye. Their perception of an alcoholic is someone who wakes up in the morning and the first thing they do is reach for a bottle. They think they carry on drinking all day and all night. This is their picture of an alcoholic. Yet, this is simply not the case. A lot of people have a heavy drink problem and don't or won't admit to it.
Some addicts can function a perfectly normal life to a certain extent. They can hold down a respectable job, lead a mediocre family life but need to drink every evening and are dependant on the drink. They cannot have one night 'off' from alcohol.
Every addict / alcoholic is different in the amount of alcohol they need or are dependant on consuming. Some people are just seen as heavy drinkers (drinking that bit more than me or you) and others need a drink from the moment they wake up in the morning. It is the dependence on the alcohol that creates the problem, as addicts find it difficult to go through any length of time without touching a drop.
Age can play a big part in the problems society has around alcohol abuse nowadays. The younger you are when you start drinking, the more chance there is of it developing into a serious problem.
Alcohol addiction is stemmed from all sorts of reasons. Most alcoholics either started drinking or use their alcohol dependency as a means to escape reality and their lives. It helps them to block out their issues and worries, if only for brief period. It's a vicious circle as alcohol is known for being a depressant so in actual fact, people who have low self esteem and feel depressed are actually making things worse for themselves by turning to drink.
The good news is that there is help out there for people with an alcohol addiction, should they take the first step to recovery. They can enter a rehab / treatment centre to detox and undergo a treatment programme. When they are out of treatment, there are plenty of Alcoholic Anonymous meetings and support groups up and down the country offering lots of advice and support.
