Understanding US Citizenship
US Citizenship is the status granted to any legal member of the United States. Generally, there are three ways to become an US citizen:
Naturalization:
The conferring of US citizenship upon a person after birth
Jus soli (right of birthplace) :
A child born in the U.S. automatically becomes a US Citizen. This does not apply if the child's parent was a foreign diplomat at the time when the child was born.
Jus sanguinis (right of blood) :
Even if a child is born outside the US, the child can acquire US Citizenship if at least one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of the child's birth.
Privileges of being a US citizen :
Only US citizens are given the right to vote in the US federal elections. They can reunite their families, bring their fiance or bring their spouse and children. As US citizens, they can sponsor them for a green card (permanent residence). US citizens can also sponsor their unmarried children who under the age of 21 (as "Immediate Relatives") for a green card. Another advantage of being a US citizen is that only US citizens qualify to sponsor their parents for a green card. Further more, a US citizen's children may also qualify for citizenship based on their parents' status as US citizens.
US citizens who are frequent travelers can get any assistance even if they are are overseas. Additionally, there is no restriction for US citizens to enter or exit the US. The period of time US citizens can spend outside the US is not restricted. Travel is also convenient as certain countries do not need visas of US citizens. With a U.S. Passport, which only US citizen can get, one can get assistance from the U.S. Government even when he/she is overseas. Citizens also become eligible for federal jobs in the US and can become elected officials. If a green card holder is accused of any illegal activity, he/she can be deported whereas an US citizen has the right to a fair trial.
US Citizenship Through Naturalization :
The process for moving a step ahead from permanent residence status to naturalized citizen requires that the person should meet the following requirements. The applicant
should be 18 years or older.
have to be a permanent resident now and during all of the past 5 years.
should have resided in the US for a continuous time period before filing for US citizenship.
should have resided in the United States for one half of the period of continuous residence requirement.
should have resided in his/her current state for at least 3 months before applying. Current state means the state where he/she is filing the US citizenship application.
should not have broken any US immigration law and that he/she was not ordered to leave the US.
should neither be a member of the Communist Party now nor have been a member of the Communist Party during the past ten years.
should be able to prove/demonstrate at least 5 years of good moral character and that he/she believes in the principles of the US constitution.
should be able to speak, read, and write basic English during the interview and that he/she can pass the test on US history and government.
should be prepared to take an oath of allegiance to the U.S.
