Understanding Ultrasound Technician Degree's

There are many different types of degrees offered for ultrasound technicians. The most common and well known degree in the profession is a 2-year associates degree and certification in diagnostic medical sonography. By completing a 2 year ultrasound program at an accredited school you can receive the Associates in Arts degree. In order to be certified as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer and get the official title, national board exams must be passed through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

Before applying to an ultrasound program you may need to complete some prerequisites; however, some programs will provide a three step process option, in which you can complete prerequisites in the first part of the program. These classes will vary based on the application process and scope of programs offered for each particular school. For example, I had to complete a minimum of 45 credits with at least a 3.2 GPA and a 4.0 GPA in the Anatomy and Physiology classes. The other prerequisites were Math, English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Medical Ethics, Medical Terminology, Sociology and two Anatomy and Physiology courses. After completing the courses the application consisted of a general application form, essay questions, resume, background check, and a video interview. Each part of the application, including my work and volunteer experience in the healthcare field, was graded on a point system.

After applying and being accepted into a program, you can expect a full 2 years or 8 quarters of education. One full year of classes will traditionally be held on campus and the additional year is a clinical internship. The first year is very rigorous with a full load of at least 17 credits (credit systems may vary from school to school). The first quarter consists of pathology, basic sectional anatomy, ultrasound physics, and the basics of scanning. The second quarter gets more in depth with pathology, beginning obstetrics and gynecology, more physics and instrumentation, and a class strictly on small parts. The third quarter is more pathology, learning to scan vascular anatomy and getting the low down on echocardiology. The last quarter in the summer is more directed toward either echo or general depending on the specialty each person chooses. There are more studies on pathology and then more advanced classes on scanning in your specialty. The last quarter is geared towards clinical and getting everyone ready to scan 40 hours a week. There are often many scanning labs and patient care classes.

The second year is a full year internship and again depending on the school it might be split at a couple different sites or just one site for the full year. This year is focused on students getting the full training needed to complete their registry board exams and to be proficient at scanning to get an entry level job. In the internship most students will work with a clinical instructor and other sonographers to get the best education and training possible to get a job at the end of the 2 year program.
