Gold is a funny substance. It is valued differently according to the quantity in which it is present.

If you buya wholesale quantity of gold, you can buy it for less than if you bought a small quantity. However, if you sell a small quantity, you will get less for it than if you had more. The factor that makes gold different from other substances traded at a market level is that it is supposedly stable in value. It"s there, in the bank vault, and its value doesn"t change (in theory). This makes it different to shares, which are a conceptual thing that can be devalued in seconds by a bad news story or a market flood.

Historically gold was seen as a boring investment "" one that didn"t do anything other than translate a sum of money into something that could be stored in a vault, safely assumed to retain its purchase value. One odd thing about this setup is that gold can theoretically increase in value when currencies get into trouble. If a currency devalues, more notes must be staked against every ounce of gold. So when two 20 notes are required to represent the value of an unchanged weight of gold, you suddenly get more paper money for the ingot in the vault.

The problem, of course, is that the money itself is worth less against things you can use it to buy. So the investor hangs onto the gold rather than putting monetary barriers between himself or herself and the vault.

Scrap gold buyers are forming a new source of gold for the investment market, by taking it out of people"s homes and allowing it to be melted down and returned to ingot form. This process is potentially costly and long "" impurities must be removed from low carat gold, for instance, before the pure stuff can be put into the ingot supply chain.
