Understanding Your Infants Eyes
Having a baby is usually one of the most joyous occasions of ones life
. However, with all of the happiness a new child brings into this world, just as much anxiety and fear also seems to appear! Taking care of a baby is very stressful and worrisome - especially to new parents. Some of the major things that we often dont even think about are medical conditions beyond our control. Well, you certainly dont want to be depending solely on your babys doctor to find any vision problems - usually with babies, the rule is: the sooner, the better! So here are some helpful tips to better understanding your childs optical needs, as well as any possible concerns you may experience as a new parent!
You may already have experienced this, but it can certainly take your baby some time for their eyes to fully adjust to their surroundings; in fact their first year of life is all about their eyes adjusting to their world around them. So if your baby is about three months or younger and they are not yet focusing on you, or objects in general right away, or if they appear to be cross-eyed, this is all very normal. However, should one of the following situations occur, it may be time to consult with your doctor (before your next scheduled eye appointment): if one of your babys eyes never open, or follows objects slower than - or not at all compared to the other eye, or if there are strange spots in the eyes in a picture (as opposed to the frequent problem of red-eye that we all tend to experience), or if your baby has a cloudy film over their pupils. In fact, it is recommended that within the first month of your babys life, parents stand no more than ten inches away from their babys face when talking with them, as this is as far as the baby can actually focus at the time.
Babies should also have their eyes checked routinely during infancy, and throughout their lifetime. If you see any of the symptoms above, or a tremendous amount of red in and around their eyes, excess tears, squinting, crusty build-up in the corners of their eyes, or what seems like immense sensitivity to light, you should contact your doctor - even if youre in between visits.
As the time comes, and your regularly scheduled doctors visits continue, should your child need to go see an ophthalmologist for a pair of prescription
eye glasses, you will likely be less worried about their future vision once you know more! Keep in touch with your doctor, possibly even get a second opinion on the exact details of your babys
eyeglasses prescription, and then hope for the best. Its a lot easier to have hope once the proper precautions are taken! But remember to enjoy this time; it goes by way too fast - in the blink of an eye, theyre all grown up!!
