Understanding Your Moles

Moles are very common in adults, with every adult having at least a few moles

. Adults who have light skin often have more moles. They may have 10 to 40 moles on their skin, which is normal. You should not be overly worries about your moles, but it is important to understand the following:

*Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, can grow in or near a mole.

*Caught early and treated, melanoma can be cured.

*The first sign of melanoma is often a change to a mole, or a new mole on your skin.

*By checking your skin at least once a month, you can find melanoma early.

Most moles are harmless, but a change in size, shape, color or texture could be indicative of a cancerous growth. Visit your Boynton dentist for further examination and diagnosis.

All About Moles

Moles are growths on the skin that are usually brown or black, and can appear anywhere on the skin, alone or in groups. Most moles appear early in childhood and during the first 20 years of a person's life. However, some may not appear until later in life. A mole on your body will typically have these traits:

*One color - often brown, but a mole can be tan, black, red, pink, blue, skin-toned, or colorless

*Round in shape

*Flat or slightly raised

*Looks the same from month to month

Your moles may not look alike. Even in the same person, moles can differ immensely in size, shape, and color. As years pass, moles usually change slowly, becoming raised and lighter in color, and sometimes will develop hairs on them.

How do I Know if It is Melanoma?

If you see a mole or new spot on your skin that has any of the ABCDEs of melanoma, visit your dermatologist in Boynton Beach immediately.

*Asymmetry - one half is unlike the other half.

*Border - an irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined border.

*Color - is varied from one area to another; has shades of tan, brown, or black; is sometimes white, red or blue.

*Diameter - melanomas are usually greater than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) when diagnosed, but they can be smaller.

*Evolving - a mole or skin lesion that looks different from the rest or is changing in size, shape or color.

If melanoma is caught early, it can be cured. However, without treatment melanoma can spread and become deadly. It is important to perform regular self-exams of your skin to help you catch melanoma early.

Your Boynton dermatologist has a trained eye and can often tell whether a spot is a mole or not. Most moles do not require treatment, but a dermatologist can remove a mole that bothers a patient, is unattractive or could be skin cancer. Moles can typically be removed during an office visit, and can be safely and easily removed.

Be sure to perform frequent skin checks, in addition to visiting your dermatologist in Boynton. If you have a mole that does not appear normal, be sure to visit your dermatologist immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment. Although moles are common, it is still important to protect yourself from skin cancer.
