Understanding the Uses and Benefits of Fluconazole
Fluconazole is part of the antifungal class, called triazoles that work by slowing fungal growth, thus preventing infection. It is effective in the treatment of many types of fungal infections, preventing yeast infections and treating meningitis.
It used to be that fungal infections such as in the mouth, vagina, esophagus, abdomen, throat, blood, lungs and other organs are difficult to prevent and treat. Not so now with the advent of Fluconazole which is part of the antifungal family called triazoles.
The Many Uses of Fluconazole:
Aside from treatment of fungal infections, Fluconazole is also used to treat meningitis or infection of the membranes covering the spine and the brain caused by fungus. Plus, Fluconazole is also used to prevent yeast infections in bone marrow transplant patient who have been infected due to radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
Serious fungal infections that started in the lungs and spreads through the body and infection of skin, nails, eye and prostate can also be treated with Fluconazole. Additionally, fungal infections in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), cancer or organ transplant operation will benefit by taking Fluconazole.
Some Side Effects That Can Be Serious:
If you are taking Fluconazole, you may experience one or more of these symptoms:
Extreme tiredness
Lack of energy
Unusual bleeding or bruising
Nausea
Rash
Itching
Seizures
Flu-like symptoms
Pale stools
Loss of appetite
Hives
Difficulty of swallowing or breathing
Swelling of the throat, tongue, face, eyes, hands, lips, feet, lower legs or ankles
Seizures
Flu-like symptoms
Yellowing of the eyes or skin
Headache
Diarrhea
Heartburn
And, pain in the upper right portion of your stomach
How to Use the Fluconazole:
This drug is available in suspension and in tablet form and usually taken once a day only. The dosage and length of treatment depend on your condition and how effective Fluconazole works for you. It is advisable to follow the directions contained in the prescription label carefully or ask your pharmacist or doctor if you have any question about how to use the drug. In case of overdose or any emergency, call a local poison control center.
