Unearthing Ancient Artifacts In Colorado
Many areas of the United States, especially those states found in the western part of the country
, were home to lots of different creatures during Prehistoric times. They also were once the home of ancient tribes and civilizations of people.
The state of Colorado is one that is especially steeped in ancient history. Antique artifacts and fossils have been discovered in many areas throughout this region.
The Anasazi Indians, formally called the Ancient Pueblo People, once roamed the lands of the West and called the area that now makes up the state of Colorado home. This tribe is most well-known for their building of stone dwelling, usually residing in cliffs.
These dwellings served not only as individual homes, but were usually built into a system of shelters that served as its own city. The placing of their cities into cliffs and canyons made the tribe less susceptible to attacks, and it offered them a greater deal of protection from animals and other tribes.
The Anasazi are also famous for their pottery, which was decorated with white and black paint and used both for cooking and decoration. You can learn more about this type of pottery, the dwellings, and the entire tribe at the Anasazi Heritage Center found at the Canyons of the Ancients Monument in Dolores, Colorado.
Here you are able to view permanent exhibits on archaeology, the history of the local area, and of Native American culture. There are also two different archaeology sites that visitors to the museum are able to visit.
The sites are dated back to the 12th century, and are full of historical objects. Some of the United States' most famous researchers of ancient life come here frequently to visit the research library of archaeology and to learn about the millions of artifacts and records of past Southwestern Native American tribes.
The museum has been in operation since the late 1980's and is one of the premiere archaeology sites in all of Colorado. The rest of the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument is also a site to behold.
The area is protected under The Antiquities Act. Therefore, no one is allowed to demolish any of the ruins or take artifacts from the canyon.
This means that many generations will be able to enjoy and learn about the ancient tribes and cultures that once roamed there. The ruins and buildings date back to the 1300's, and are majestic and beautiful.
Another ancient site of the Puebloan Indians in Colorado is the Yucca House National Monument. You will find even more ruins and an archaeological site here.
For a look into the even more distant pass, try visiting the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Here you are able to see one of the largest fossil deposits in the world.
This is a fun and educational place for the entire family to come, for you are able to view the interesting fossils and learn about the Prehistoric history of the western United States. Found at the park is also a large collection of petrified wood.
Both of the trails where you are able to view the fossils, the Ponderosa Loop Trail and the Petrified Forest Trail, are self guided. However, there is an twelve minute educational video about the park and ancient life, while rangers give presentations in the amphitheater during the spring and summer months.
Those interested in Prehistoric Life cannot miss the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center. It is has been rated number two in the United States for best dinosaur museums.
The museum has a great deal of fossil exhibits where you and your family can learn about all of the different types of ancient creatures that used to called the land that is now Colorado home. You can also peer into the glass of the Paleontology Laboratory and watch the researchers and fossil technicians recreate the bones that are found in slabs of rock take from archaeological sites.
All of the exhibits at this museum are recreations, because the original bones and skeletal systems are catalogued and placed into storage. However, the displays are exact copies and are sure to amaze you and your family.
Colorado is home to a great deal of ancient life just waiting to be explored. It is a great place for your family to visit if you are interested in prehistoric life and civilizations and cultures from the past.
