First starting in the catering industry I studied a BTEC national diploma in hospitality and catering management
. I passed this with distinction and my first real taste of responsibility in the workplace came when I was eighteen and was promoted to acting restaurant manager of a five star hotel in Richmond London. This was a great experience and gave me the motivation to keep aiming upwards.
While working at this hotel I was very lucky to have a few well known celebrities as regular customers of mine, these included Phil Collins and Mick Jagger. I really enjoyed my time in this industry but decided to try and branch out into other industries and learn new skills. With just a C in maths I attended an interview with a London financial bank to apply for a job as a pricing analyst, this is a very analytical job keeping track of stock and shares movements and there effects on business investments. Many people ask how I moved into such a high flying role and managed to get the job over graduates and people with many years experience in the industry, this is simple Belief. If you believe in yourself and what you can do there is nothing that cannot be done.
My belief in being able to obtain any goal led me to taking the plunge and starting my own business. My business is Unicora.com, Unicora is a web and graphic design company and I specialise in helping small to medium businesses, sole-traders and freelancers get online and get noticed. The web is the single biggest area you can advertise your business, services or products and with the right look and advertisement can increase your business quickly. Unfortunately even with the saturation of web designers small businesses are often not prioritised as clients due to larger corporations offering vast sums of money for continual web development and SEO services. I started Unicora after seeing that due to this, small businesses with lower budgets have limited choice when it comes to getting online. I was shocked by the obvious poor quality of the some of the sites sold to people and knew I could offer attractive sites with many features such as social networking integration to increase potential customers at a fraction of the price of other companies.
People often ask what benefits getting their business online will reap. In my opinion getting online is a vital step for any business large or small. With the world blogging, instant chatting, tweeting and Facebook poking their way around the web, if you are not online you are missing out. People spend hours online shopping and searching for services they need. Dead are the days of yellow pages replaced by yell.com and other online directories.
However it's not just important to get online, getting online is only the very start. You can get online creating a free site with one of the many websites or programs available but doing this has some major limitations. The first is that the web address of your company will be inside another website instantly making it look unprofessional and cheap. It also means you are limited with your resources and design.
Standing out online is vital if you want to make the most of the web. A memorable web address and eye catching design will help you get more visitors and having a well planned easy to navigate site will keep people on your site. Just like wearing a suit to an interview, a well dressed website will make a good lasting impression on potential clients.
The web also allows you to incorporate so many features into your website to really help your business grow and at a price that in comparison to offline options is unbelievable value. Your website can act like a store front for your business at a fraction of the price of renting a premium building. Earlier I mentioned social networking sites and how popular they have become and using clever marketing and website designs you can boost your company's customers by tapping into these very popular sites and even get your customers to contact their networks of friends promoting your services.
This boom of social networking site popularity led me to choosing Qype for my promotion. Unlike other business directories that follow the same trend as every other Qype includes a much more social structure and allows ratings, messaging and other social features. I was also impressed by the design of Qype its simple to navigate and extremely user friendly. I have recently upgraded to a premium listing and so far happy with the results. I have had a nice little boost in traffic and have already had comments posted on my company listing about the services I have provided. This five star rating is a great way of proving my work to potential clients. The other useful tool is the widgets that display your Qype rating and last few comments, I am using one of these widgets on my websites front page and have had great comments from my clients. It also allows me to promote my services as 'Rated five stars on Qype' something I take great pride in!

Qype have an iPhone app that allows you to search your local area for businesses and services as well as take advantage of the coupon facility on Qype. With the smart phone growing more popular and more people downloading apps like Qype to help them find the best deals, surely this is something you would like to take advantage off?
I do see Qype as a good promotional tool and feel that it is well worth the investment over other directories. With some extra work put into promoting the iPhone app and perhaps a slight tweak on the homepage. Currently the homepage is set automatically to London and this can give the impression the it only covers this area when in reality it cover the whole United Kingdom and expanding to all other countries.
