Unilateral Tinnitus - Some Helpful Advice

Tinnitus may be a condition that affects one or both ears

. If it affects both ears, it is called bilateral. If it affects one ear, it is called the unilateral. A tinnitus could be heard by the person who has the condition, but there are few who has a pulsatile type of tinnitus wherein the sound is not only perceived by the sufferer but also the one who is near him. But this is a rare case of just 3 percent among those who has tinnitus. Unilateral tinnitus is a more common type of tinnitus as compared to the bilateral.

The unilateral tinnitus is also known as buzzing in one ear or tinnitus in the left ear. One cause of a tinnitus is impacted earwax. This must be brought to a doctor as they have their special instruments used to clean and suck out this impacted earwax safely. Doing it on your own or having it done by another person may cause damage in the ear. Ear infection could be a cause for unilateral tinnitus. There are medications for the infection but it may aggravate the condition of tinnitus. More drugs that might cause the condition would be anti-depressants, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, ibuprofen, anti-malarial, oral contraceptives and chemotherapy.

Traumatic head injury could damage or traumatize the components of the middle ear. These auditory nerves may send incorrect data to the brain once it is damaged or traumatized. High decibel sounds or a constant exposure to loud sounds would result into damaged hair cells thus causing a unilateral tinnitus. The hair cells on the cochlea transform sound waves into electrochemical currents that bring auditory information to the brain. If this is damaged, the brain will continue to translate false signals sent by these hair cells. This procedure causes the tinnitus.

As it hasnt been proven to cause a ringing in the ear, it may still be related to unilateral tinnitus. A study has it that an excessive stress will cause a chemical imbalance in the body. The chemical imbalance could turn fluid levels in the ear to be unstable. This unstableness will then cause an ear ringing symptom. Diets must be monitored for those who have tinnitus. Cessation of salty diet, high caffeine intake, too much alcohol, too much fat, and nicotine must be considered as it may increase the possibility of a tinnitus.

What could be a simple problem as the unilateral tinnitus may lead to a permanent hearing loss if the person neglects his condition or will self medicate. It is always best to get the opinion of the experts for the condition as tinnitus is just a symptom of an underlying disease. The best way is to have an evaluation of why it occurs and have the real cause be treated. There have been so many ways to treat unilateral tinnitus but what would be treated on would be the primary concern that must be considered.
