We are all aware of the fact that there are hundreds of uninsured drivers on the roads in the UK, who cause chaos when they are involved in an accident and cost us hundreds with inflated car insurance costs for those of us honest enough to have car insurance. It's a pain for genuine road users, and something that the government invest money into cracking down on on a yearly basis.

But the Motor Insurance Bureau have revealed that as many as five hundred uninsured cars are seized on a daily basis, with the most commonly seized vehicle being the Vauxhall Astra. If you think of the amount of cars that are on the roads then it doesn't seem like a lot, but if you think of the amount that this is still costing us, then it is a great deal.

Modern technology means that uninsured drivers are now more likely than ever to get caught, and face a two hundred pound fixed penalty and six points on their driving licence. Their car is also seized at the scene and they are required to pay any towing fees and a one hundred and fifty pounds release fee from the place their car is impounded.

These is all supposed to deter would be drivers from risking the gauntlet of driving without insurance, but driving bodies feel that the fees are too low and fines should be increase to deter more drivers. If costs were higher then it would be financially difficult if you got caught, and therefore might coax people into paying the comparatively small fee.

Six points on the licence is a good amount for young drivers who are only allocated six points to start, but for a driver who has a clean licence, six points is nothing. Industry specialists are calling on the government to take a harsher line on punishing drivers without insurance, to make the roads safer for the rest of us.
