The invention of the computer was arguably one of the greatest technological leaps of the last century

. But until the advent of software, it was not useful tool for business or the population in general. It was in fact, the humble spreadsheet that turned an invention into a ubiquitous must have tool for every business. The sophistication of business has led to ever greater needs for useful information, and that is where Crystal Reports come in.

The computer age freed companies from using their manpower in stovepipe organizational models. Still, one of the most complex parts of business today is how to use the enormous quantity of data collected throughout the business. The spectre of management sitting on all the answers they could ever need to make the business run at peak efficiency, but not being able to read it was a frustrating reality. Typically, things muddled along until there was an astonishing failure or breakdown.

Forensic analysis of breakdown executed at high expense and manpower invariably revealed the proper decision could have been made with the reports already in existence if they had but made their way to the decision maker in a manner he could understand. The operative concept was getting data in a form that could be turned into into actionable information.

A manger trying t decide whether it is better to increase production in America or in Europe will need to have the supply chain information from man different countries, companies and providers, along with statistics on transportation costs, fuel availability and storage capacities in reports that measure apples against apples or his work is reduced to advanced guessing. Worse, if the disparate values he receives are incorrectly assessed, he risks making bad decisions while thinking he is productive.

The usual means for handling this information confusion is to hire or create a separate section to do nothing but correlate the data to present to management. In addition to being a costly way to develop information the company already has, the data may not be collated the way the decision maker actually needed, adding error to confusion.

The answer is to write software that can accept data in all formats and styles and manipulate the data to build presentations and reports in the manner the decision maker needs. Add to this ideal tool the ability to change and cross reference data and you have a tool management can use to decide what they should do about what is going to happen instead of reacting to what happened in the past. This is the elegance of crystal reports.
