UPC which is the abbreviation for the Universal Product Code was created and developed to speed up the check out process of items in the department and grocery stores and they also help in tracking the inventory, mishandling and misuses. However, the simplicity and the ease of use has made them successful and also made them useful in all kinds of businesses these days. If you observe any electronics item or any receipt or any garment that you purchased then you can see the bar code associated with them. It is unique and links to a record that has all the information like the price, discount and special features about the particular product. UPC codes are owned by a company called GS1 to which all the manufacturers who intend to use the UPC system must apply for the permission and they have to pay some annual fee for getting the privilege of using the codes. In return they will get a twelve digit bar code for the item along with the guide lines of using it. The UPC codes contain two parts. One is the machine readable bar code which is often the wide and narrow bars and the human readable twelve digits UPC code. The first five digits of the twelve digits is the manufacturer identification code that is unique for all the products of the particular manufacturer. The next five digits is the code for the item and the last one is called the check digit that tells the scanner if it has scanned the number correctly or not. The check digit is calculated from all the other eleven digits and if the scanner detects some problem in evaluating the correct one then it knows that there is some problem and the item needs to be rescanned. When the bar code reader scans the UPC code of an item the cash register sends out the number to the store's central POS also known as Point of Sale computer to check the UPC number which sends back the price and the applicable discount on the item to the system which actually scanned the item.
