Universal Works
In 2008, David Keyte founded the British clothing brand Universal Works. Like many famous designers, David started out in the fashion industry as a shop boy working in minor fashion stores. Eventually he was given a management position at the original Paul Smith store and progressively moved into sales, product management and sourcing. At that point he was head hunted into a "high fashion street" job, which he quickly discovered was not for him, so he left and started his own small retail business while doing consultancy work with designers and companies on product development and sourcing fabrics and garments. Not long thereafter David created Universal Works' inaugural collection for winter 2009 with 20 solid years of industry experience under his belt.
The mission of Universal Works is to create quality apparel with a great fit. It's essentially traditional British work wear that's been updated for the modern man. Rather than being a slave to passing trends, it's focused on creating garments with a purpose that are made to last. Universal Works clothing is made with natural materials by skilled craftsmen--not mass-produced--and isn't over-designed so as to make it thoroughly enjoyable and flattering to wear.
What sets Universal Works apart from other brands in the fashion world is David's dedication to using small producers and keeping things simple. He cares about every part of the production process and doesn't outsource work to nameless corporations. And he's shown that easy-care and easy-wear clothes can still look and feel like luxury. So it's no wonder Universal Works clothing is of such broad appeal in the marketplace, being sold by such diverse retailers as Oi Polloi, skate stores and Fenwick's of Bond Street. In short, their clothes are universal and claim as their peer any seller offering honest, quality, understated menswear.
Over the years, one of the most important things David has learned is that less is more. Staying focused, being honest and treating others as you want to be treated are all a big part of success. Going forward his plans for Universal Works include preserving the brand's preppy British feel and keep on making clothes with soul and passion. He hopes to find more excellent makers to collaborate with and grow the brand slowly and surely, without losing sight of Universal Works' founding principles.
