Unlocking your BlackBerry – Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Do It

Unlocking your BlackBerry Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Do It

What does unlocking mean?

First, let's clear up some misconceptions associated with unlocking a BlackBerry. Unlocking doesn't allow you to perform special functions with your BlackBerry that you're unable to do while it's locked, it doesn't give you access to free applications, and most importantly it does NOT negatively affect your device in any way. Unlocking does not make your BlackBerry slow, or unstable, and it does not decrease your reception quality. These are all myths, without any truth to them.

Unlocking your BlackBerry simply removes the network restrictions that were placed on it when it was first manufactured. When cell phones are manufactured, they are made for particular service providers. This is the case for all cell phones, not just BlackBerries. If you live in the USA, your cell phone comes pre-locked to a service provider like AT&T or T-Mobile. In the UK your cell phone would be pre-locked to Orange, or O2, or Vodafone. This means your cell phone can only be used with the particular carrier to which it's locked, and not with any other carries. To "unlock" your BlackBerry simply means to remove this restriction so that you can use your BlackBerry with any cell phone service provider around the world.

How does unlocking your BlackBerry benefit you?

For starters, you will save a whole lot of money on roaming fees if you ever travel. "Roaming" is when you use your original carrier's SIM card in your BlackBerry and connecting to another carrier's network. For example if your BlackBerry is currently locked to AT&T in the USA and you travel to Canada, you will be able to connect to the Canadian Rogers Wireless network using your AT&T SIM card. However, the costs associated with roaming can be very steep. One can easily be billed hundreds or even thousands of dollars on their cell phone bill for a few days of roaming on another network. By unlocking your BlackBerry, you'll be able to take our your original SIM card from your BlackBerry and just use a local SIM card from wherever you are travelling. Referring to my previous example, you would be able to just insert a Rogers prepaid SIM card into your AT&T BlackBerry and use your BlackBerry on a pay-as-you-go basis while you are in Canada, saving you hundreds of dollars in roaming fees.

Some people may not travel much but still make the wise decision to unlock their BlackBerry. They do this because the simple act of unlocking your BlackBerry raises it's resale value by about 50%. You may not be thinking of selling your BlackBerry now, but sooner or later you will want to sell it second-hand. If you don't unlock your BlackBerry, you would limit yourself by only being able to sell it to somebody who is a customer of the same cell phone service provider as you. If your BlackBerry is locked to T-Mobile, you would only be able to sell it to somebody who is also a T-Mobile customer. However, if you unlock your BlackBerry, the number of potential customers that would be interested in buying it increases dramatically because an unlocked BlackBerry will work with any network. This will naturally cause an increase in its resale value.

Lastly, by unlocking your BlackBerry, you give yourself the freedom to use your BlackBerry with any network operator you desire. Just because your BlackBerry was made locked to one provider does not mean you should be stuck with that network provider indefinitely. Give yourself the liberty to enjoy the ownership of your BlackBerry, and at the same time to choose the service provider that best suits your needs.

All you need to unlock your BlackBerry is an unlock code, and when you can get them for as cheap as $7.50 fromwww.BlackBerryFreedom.com, what do you have to lose?
