Unravelling the Mystery of Golf
The game of golf is a complete mystery to beginners and casual observers; what with its little white balls, countless metal sticks and strange scoring systems. Actually golf is a rather simple game, when you get to the basics of it.
The Golf Course
This is the massive green field on which the game is played. There is no standard design for a golf course, and it generally follows the natural landscape except for the man-made modifications. Each field has 18 holes, although smaller ones have 9 holes whereby you play two rounds. Other fields have 27 or 36 holes and you must choose two groups of nine holes to play.
Each hole has a section of ground. The starting point in a section is called a tee or teeing ground and the ending point called the putting green. Each putting green has a small hole that you're aiming to put your ball in. The long stretch of ground in between the tee and putting green is called the fairway.
The fairway has many tricky points called hazards, which can be natural or man-made and generally are of three types:
Water hazards, for example ponds or rivers (can be natural or man-made).
Bunkers: a hole or depression in the ground that has been filled with sand.
Dense vegetation such as forests or thick bush.
Equipment
Golf clubs
These are the metal sticks' used to hit a golf ball. The club has three parts: a long pole called a shaft; the top end that you grip, called the lance; the bottom, wide end for hitting, called the head.
There are 4 different types of clubs and a golfer can select up to 14 clubs for his game. Different clubs are better suited for different distances and strokes. In general, the longer clubs are good for long distances and the short clubs for shorter distances.
Golf balls
They are small, round, white balls with minute pockmarks or dimples all over. The pockmarks reduce the air resistance when the ball is flying' so that it travels faster than would a smooth ball.
Golf clothing
Golf shoes are specially designed footwear for golfing. Usually they have metal or plastics spikes on the sole to increase traction (your foot's grip in the grass). Many golf clubs require players to wear proper golfing shoes as it helps to maintain the condition of the golf course.
Otherwise, there is no standard uniform for playing golf, and typically golfers will wear comfortable, casual clothing suitable for the game and the weather. Different golf clubs and golf tournaments may have specific rules on clothing; for example length of trouser or sleeve, type of hat, colours etc.
Golf bag
A long bag used for carrying the clubs, balls, and other supplies including gloves, dusting cloths etc. They have straps for carrying on the shoulder or by hand, and one can be purchased with a two-wheeled cart for pulling along the bag.
The Aim of the game
The golf player (also called the golfer) is aiming to hit the ball into each of the 18 holes, using the clubs and with as few strokes (hits) as possible. The more skilled a golfer, the lower his number of strokes (also known as stroke play).
Scoring
Par the basic score word in golf. The scores are calculated on the number of strokes it takes to hit from the tee to a particular hole. In a par-four hole, a golfer is expected to hit a maximum of 4 strokes: two from the tee to the green, and two to role the ball into the hole. A hole can range from par- three to seven. An 18-hole course has a combination of pars totalling between 70 72 par.
The handicap is a measure of a golfer's ability to achieve the par level of a golf course. In other words, how many strokes above the course par are you generally. Professional golfers may hit lower than the par level (hence they're professionals).
When you enrol in golf lessons the trainer will teach you these basics and more. You'll learn the essentials of your body positioning, how to hit different types of strokes, wiggling out of hazards, golf etiquette, etc., all of which will guide you towards your best possible stroke play or par level.
