Unvented Cylinders Compared To Vented Systems

The vented systems are the traditional versions of appliances that are used to heat

the water and provide warmth in the winter within the interior rooms of homes and businesses. The unvented cylinders are the newcomers to these devices but they are quickly replacing the old tried and true systems because they are so convenient and handy to have.

The unvented cylinders operate by getting water from the mains supply that is entering the structure and utilizing a boiler and sometimes an immersion heater in conjunction to provide hot water on demand. This means you turn on the faucet and wait one to two minutes and you have heated water flowing from the pipes.

Of course with vented versions you also turned on a faucet and waited a short period of time and heated fluid emerged from the pipe. The difference is the vented style had a storage tank that held a limited supply of heated liquid. When you turned on the faucet and used some of the liquid cold water was rushed in to take the place of the warm water that was extracted, and this cold liquid reduced the temperature of all of the liquid in the tank so the boiler had to fire and heat all of the liquid even though only a small amount was taken out when the faucet was used. The largest problem that people had with this style of appliance was that they frequently ran out of their supply of heated water and had to wait for the large tank to heat up again so they could have some more. This waiting period could last from thirty minutes to an hour.

People also complained that when they were away from the structure the boiler still had to use fuel in order to maintain the temperature of the contents in the tank. This meant the fuel bills for the fuel that powered the boiler was higher than they needed to be. Hot water on demand from unvented cylinders would mean that the boiler would only need fuel when the people of the home demanded hot water. This means lower fuel bills, and this is good news for everyone, but especially good news for those individuals that use heating oil instead of mains gas to power their devices.

Unvented cylinders do not have to be placed in the loft and they do not have the same risk of getting frozen pipes in the winter that the traditional style does. With a standard tank system the tank is placed in the loft of the building and gravity feeds the water down to the faucets when they are engaged. These pipes can easily freeze when the temperatures drop below freezing and remain there. People who were going to be away from home for more than a few days would drain the vented tank completely so they could prevent pipes from bursting in the winter, and so they could stop the water from becoming stagnant within the holding cylinder. The worry of broken pipes and the damages that the water coming from these pipes can cost is one reason people are switching to the unvented cylinders.
