The motherboard consists of a CPU, some RAM, expansion slots, and some silicon chips. This chipset is the most important part. Therefore, when you update your motherboard drivers, you are really updating the motherboard chipset.
What is the Chipset?
The chipset has a driver, which controls the speed and the stability of the majority of the devices running on your motherboard. Any integrated device will be affected by this chipset.
Even though this chipset is vital to the functioning of your computer, it is common for these drivers to be old. Sometimes, the chipset drivers are your basic default drivers that come with Windows.

Most stability problems with the motherboard are due to an old chipset driver. This is even more true if your motherboard uses AGP slots. However, even if your computer does not use an AGP motherboard, it is still a good idea to update the chipset drivers.
The Chipset Drivers
In most cases, the chipset is made of two chips: the southbridge and the northbridge. The southbridge supports stuff like the USB ports, network connections and disk drives. The northbridge supports stuff like the CPU and the expansion slots. Occasionally, there is only one chip but it is still referred to as a chipset.
Generally, the same manufacturer makes both chips in the chipset. In those cases, you only need to download the drivers for the set. It is usually a unified package that automatically takes care of all the various drivers the chipset uses.
However, some motherboards will use two different manufacturers for the chipset. One for the northbridge and one for the southbridge. In those cases, you will have to download the chipsets from the individual manufacturers. Still, it should automatically download the correct drivers each chip controls.
Finding and Installing the Chipset Drivers
When looking for the chipset drivers, you only need to know the name of the northbridge driver. The southbridge is never mentioned. Therefore, if you have an Intel chipset, you are saying your northbridge is Intel.
Assuming you know what chipset your motherboard uses, you simply go to the site and download the latest drivers. You will download a zip file. You will unzip the file and then run it. Everything else will be automatic, as you will only need to follow the onscreen directions.
If you do not know which chipset your motherboard uses, you will either need to run a program that will indentify it or use driver update software.

The good thing about using driver update software is you do not need to know anything about any of your drivers, your motherboard, or even your computer. When you run the software, it automatically scans your computer for drivers. When it finds one that needs updating, it places it on a list. Then you can choose which drivers you wish to update and download only those.
Downloading and installing drivers with update software is a snap too. All you need to do is click download and then click install. The software automatically finds and installs the new drivers for you.
