CoQ10 is a naturally occurring vital coenzyme which is made in the cells of all animals including humans. As bodies age the ability of the individual cells have a reduced capability of making coQ10. coQ10 is not only an important coenzyme but an absolutely necessary coenzyme for the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate)(1). ATP serves as the major energy source for all cellular functions, especially muscles. As we all know the heart muscle is the hardest working muscle in the body, and as such should be the most important muscle when discussing the role of coQ10 in terms of our overall health. In the field of bioenergetics coQ10 has been well studied and determined to be the agent responsible for energy production in all tissues. (The term "bioenergetics" has been used to describe the field of biochemistry looking specifically at cellular energy production.) (2) Any reduction in the levels of coQ10 in the tissues is a factor in how well our systems work. When the term "all tissues" is used it doesn't mean some tissues. Imagine looking at each individual cell in the body in its own right and finding that the energy produced within that cell is dependent on coQ10. Then think about your heart. The hardest working muscle in your body being deprived of enough coQ10 that the muscle cannot function as it should. One would rightly conclude that the deprivation of coQ10 in the heart muscle may lead to heart failure. "There is promising evidence of a beneficial effect of CoQ(10) when given alone or in addition to standard therapies in hypertension and in heart failure ." (from "Coenzyme Q10 in cardiovascular disease.")
The relationship between our cholesterol levels and levels of coQ10 is an important one. According to a recent article from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "coQ10 levels are suppressed in people who have elevated cholesterol levels compared to healthy individuals of the same age. In addition, certain cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins which are known to reduce the natural levels of coQ10 in the body. Therefore, if our natural production of coQ10 is reduced just from getting older (past 40 years old) and we are taking statin drugs to lower our levels of low density lipoproteins, there is a good possibility that we should be supplementing our diet with coQ10. Since we also know that there is a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and heart disease, we should also be supplementing our diet with Vitamin D. We are also acutely aware that Omega3 fatty acids are beneficial to our vascular system, we should also be adding an Omega3 supplement.

Taking coQ10 supplements can correct the deficiency caused by statin medications without affecting the medication's positive effects on cholesterol levels. Plus, studies show that coQ10 supplementation may decrease the muscle pain associated with statin treatment."(3) Authorities in the field of Cardiology have recommended that doctors have their patients who are being treated with statin drugs take supplemental coQ10. CoQ10 is being used to prevent heart failure in some patients taking statins.
