Then the Broken braces, loose bands, poking, protruding wires can cause some problems but if it is too painfull ,we can call for an emergency treatment. At first fix the problem temporarily until you get some professional help. Then Call to the orthodontist's clinic and discuss about your problem to determine whether you need an immediate visit or not. For a severe problem like sports-related mouth or face injury we have to seek immediate attention.
The Braces, bands or wires that are affixed to each tooth will break or fall off occasionally. The real cause for the minor discomfort is due to the loosening of the braces parts. The few problems that can occur are,
Loose bracket: Generally the braces are small metal or ceramic pieces attached to the teeth. They are usually bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth with a material called composite resin which looks similar to the dentist's tooth-colored filling material. If you chew something hard or sticky then the bond get weakens and breaks. Then the bracket may easily dislodge and can poke at the gum tissue or other soft tissues in the mouth, such as your tongue or cheek. You can temporarily reattach loose brackets with a small piece of orthodontic wax by placing over the bracket to provide a cushion. So that it doesn't damages your tissue.
Loose band: The Orthodontic bands are simple metal rings cemented with dental bonding agents or cements around the back teeth and sometimes around the front teeth. Today most of the orthodontists use bonded brackets on the front teeth and bands on the back teeth. Then do not replace it yourself if the band comes off from the teeth completely. Thus Save the band and call to schedule an appointment for an orthodontic repair.
Protruding or broken wire: This is a common problem related to braces. If a wire sticks out of the bracket or breaks, it may easily damage your cheek, tongue or gum. The easiest solution is by using the eraser end of a pencil to push the wire into a less bothersome position. If you are not able to bend it, apply a small piece of orthodontic wax to the end that is sticking out. Dont cut or press the orthodontic wire. A cut wire swallowed or inhaled accidentally damages your lungs. If the damaged wire creates a painful sore then rinse your mouth with warm salt water or with an antiseptic rinse to keep your mouth clean and helps to reduce the discomfort.
Loose space: The Spacers or separators are circular rubber pieces which are placed between your teeth. They are left in the place for a brief period of time. Then the spacers open a small space between your tooth so that the orthodontic band will slip into the place easily. Sometimes, they may slip out of the position. If this happens you should make an appointment with your orthodontist immeadiately.
The Broken brackets, loose bands or wires are usually easy to repair. In some cases, your orthodontist can adjust, reposition the existing wires or brackets. If it is not possible, then your orthodontist will go for a new one. If you have any problems, doubts with the braces then consult your orthodontist as soon as possible.
