Upper East Side Braces - What is Tooth Sensitivity
When you take some hot, cold, sweet or very acidic foods, drinks and breathings in cold air can make your teeth more sensitive or painful
Nowadays Tooth sensitivity is very common and it has been estimated approximately that half the number of population suffers from tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity can come and go over time.
Causes of Tooth sensitivity:
Generally Tooth sensitivity is caused by dentin on root areas due to receded gums or periodontal diseases. Then the Receded gums is a common issue and up to four fifths of the old people suffer from the gum recession.
When the root of the teeth becomes exposed it does not have a layer of enamel like the crowns of your teeth. Instead the roots have a very soft covering called cementum, which once leaves the dentin of the root exposed. Overzealous brushing or using a very abrasive toothpaste can also cause abrasion of the tooth's enamel surface and expose dentin. Then if you have a lot of citrus food, pickles or soda pop can cause tooth erosion and dissolve the tooth surface, exposing the dentin. Bulimia and GERD can also result in dental erosion and sensitivity due to acid in the mouth.
What Makes Exposed Dentin Painful?
The Dentin contains thousands of tiny channels and they are not visible to naked eyes. These channels run from the surface, through the dentin to the nerve center of the tooth pulp and contains some fluid in it. When the channel is exposed to hot or cold foods, the fluid in these tiny channels moves and irritates the nerves in the tooth and causes some hectic pain.
Prevent the Tooth Sensitivity?
You can reduce the tooth sensitivity by keeping your mouth as healthy as possible with a very good oral hygiene which helps to prevent the receding gums and periodontal disease. Good Brushing and flossing techniques and using a low abrasion toothpaste can help you to reduce the chance of tooth sensitivity.
At first tell to your dentist or hygienist about the problem. your dentist or hygienist may suggest to use a low abrasion toothpaste, specially made for the sensitive teeth. Alternatively, your dentist may prescribe a fluoride gel or a fluoride rinse and a high fluoride level toothpaste which is specially formulated to make your teeth less sensitive and provides you an extra protection against decay.
These treatments may treated at home easily when you are brushing your teeth and they are inexpensive too.
