Us Open 2012
Have you seen the beautiful weather over at Flushing Meadows
? It always amazes me just how hot they get the summers in New York, and yet their winters are the reverse very cold and often heavy snow is part of the scene. Just wish we could have more consistency here in the UK.. Enough about the weather! What about Laura Robson in the US Open Tennis 2012, not just the great result in beating number 23 seed and former world number one and previous US Open champion Kim Clijsters 7-6 7-6 in round two, but her maturity in beating number 9 (and world number 8) Li Na was just fantastic....Having taken the first set 6-4 she was holding her own in the second until she just didn't manage to get enough first serves in and Na edged it in the tie break. Given the experience of the number 9 seed she would have been expected to go on and win the match. However Robson had other ideas and despite two dubious decisions from the umpire, she went on to show maturity beyond her 18 years and stormed back to win the deciding set and the match 6-2. Next up in round four last years US Open champion, the Australian Stosur, come on Laura....her new coach has certainly made a difference!
The big guns are still there in the womens section Radwanska, Williams (looking ominous again) Kvitova, Sharapova and Azarenka. Sharapova appears to be over the stomach problems that were part of her problem at the Olympics she thought she may be pregnant, but she has been given the all clear..
In the mens tournament its sad to see Andy Roddock's decision to retire but he feels the time is right, we mentioned here recently that he was on the decline as a top player. He won one major the US Open nine years ago and remains the last American to win a major. He appeared in three Wimbledon finals but sadly he was up against Federer who was at the top of his game on each occasion and lost all three. How could we forget the wonderful final that went to five sets and finished 16-14 in the fifth set. He is still in this one lets hope he goes a long way. All the top seeds are still around in the men's section to..
This includes Andy Murray and yes he is through to the fourth round after a close match with Feliciano Lopez 3 sets to 1 but he won all three sets on the tie break wow.. A great tournament so far. The US Open maybe the last grand slam of 2012, but it is serving up some majestic Tennis for us all to enjoy, in both the men's and women's section there are no obvious winners it really is wide open, and the next few days should see some exciting encounters as the tournament enters the strongest stage.
