Use Of Computer Data Center Continues To Expand

. According to a July 2010 survey conducted by Data Center Knowledge, the United States' leading users of computer data center space continue to increase use of these mission-critical facilities. The survey states that nearly two-thirds of data center facilities in the U.S. are in active expansion mode.

The results of the Data Center Knowledge survey underscore the continued increase in need for new computer data center space and reflect on changes regarding how business are procuring new data center facilities. The survey also found mixed adoption of cloud computing services, which suggests that large users of computer data center space are being cautious in the introduction of cloud services.

According to the report, 63 percent of those surveyed said they are either in the midst of data center expansion projects or have just completed a new facility. The majority, 59 percent of those surveyed said they continue to manage and build their computer data centers in-house, while 41 percent are using a wholesale computer data center provider for their expansion.

These findings support anecdotal accounts that there has been an increase in the number of major computer data center users seeking to save money and resources by using third-party providers. This trend has proven to be beneficial for wholesale computer data center providers.

Data Center Knowledge survey responders reported that offering savings on construction costs using a wholesale provider also limited cost overruns. Roughly 20 percent of projects were not completed on time or were over budget, but in-house computer data center projects were almost twice as likely to have cost overruns, costing businesses millions of dollars.

Many in the hosting and data center industry are carefully watching the growth of cloud computing. According to the Data Center Knowledge survey, nearly 50 percent of respondents have implemented cloud services on some level.

Other results suggest that:

- 11 percent of respondents say they have implemented cloud computing "broadly"

- 21 percent have implemented "selectively in production"

- 15 percent are using the cloud for development and testing

- 12 percent of respondents stated that they plan to implement cloud services within the next two years

- 19 percent said they had "no plans for cloud computing"

Data Center Knowledge received responses from more than 240 readers. These readers are among the most active users of mission-critical space, as over 50 percent of respondents own or operate three or more data centers and 26 percent of respondents operate at least 10 data centers.

The survey's conclusions confirm demand for data center space has continued to increase through the economic downswing, as the growth of digital data and online services has prompted companies to expand.

The conclusions also support results from major data center and co-location service providers, who have reported a continued increase in customers and leasing of new space. While sales cycles have increased in length in some segments of the enterprise market as businesses consider more options, managed hosting providers and Internet companies have been moving quickly to add computer data center space.
