Use Social Media To Promote Your Next Event

Tweet tweet

Tweet tweet. It isnt the sound of birds outside your window signifying spring. But its definitely the sound of a new awakening. The social media world has taken event marketing by storm. The good news is, these sites can make an event planner / promoters job a whole lot easier (not to mention more successful) if used in the right way. Its all about reaching more people directly with less effort and less money. When looked at that way, whats not to love?

Face-to-face conversations will always have an edge. But in a world where that can be costly, time-consuming, and hard to scale, social media is the next best thing. What newbies to this space may not realize is that unlike ads, social media takes typical one-way information sharing and moves closer to two-way conversation all without actually talking to someone. It lets the people you want to reach, reach you back, and also reach others that are interested in the same things they are. Thats a pretty powerful concept in terms of engaging audiences and gaining valuable feedback about how to serve them better. Not to mention its usually done at a cost of $0 given all the free tools available! If youre wondering how Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and blogs can help supplement your next event promotion efforts, read on...

1. Do whatever it takes to attract and maintain a following. The key to social media is getting people to join, follow, and read about your event. Think of it as being both a leader and a connector. Create a brand that is recognized as providing relevant and interesting content to the audience youre trying to reach. The event itself may not always be the primary draw, but if youre able to put something out there thats informative and alluring, people will come back for more. And when they do, its the perfect time to throw in a plug for an upcoming event. But remember that the web allows for two-way communication so listen to what your fans / followers are writing about and respond to it by changing your content, providing links to useful sites or products, or posting interactive content like polls. This is the best way to ensure that once youve built an audience, they stay with you.

2. Remember that one good deed deserves another. Social media is exactly that social. Find Facebook or Twitter groups that already have huge followings and are relevant to your target market. Dont only post a link to these groups on your own site, but become a follower of those groups yourself and post interesting comments so people in that community start to know you. But no one likes chatter just for the sake of talking if you post something that people find insightful or useable, theyre likely to be curious and connect directly to you. Its the circle of social media and in the web world, promoting others is often the best way to get yourself known.

3. Fearlessly follow-up. Social media outlets may make it easier in some ways, but its still not easy. It takes diligent effort to engage a community, keep them there through your event, and then re-engage them after the event is over to gather feedback. The ability to follow-up is a huge benefit and one that cant be easily replicated in the face-to-face world. Do this well and getting feedback about what could have been done better, what worked well, and what to do next time could go from a pool of 50 to a pool of 500.
