The planning of waste water management should start from the needs and use of the building. Summer cottage used only in summer time might not need the complete bio-chemical wastewater treatment system, as this system is costly and requires regular maintenance. However if the flush toilet is in use, that is often the only option.

The chosen specialist should be impartial and familiar with different solutions. The good designer checks the local requirements also and prepares two or three different solutions for the client to choose. They can also help with construction permits and other possible authorization procedures.


Good sources of finding the waste water specialist are large hardware store (in Finnish: rautakauppa) nearby the building. Local specialists know the local requirements and construction workers, and when local designer is used, not too much money is paid for travelling expenses.


Waste water engineering for a house that is used year round costs about 1000-1500 euros. Summer cottage are usually done for a lower cost.
