It is very important to have a recovery plan set in place that includes a SQL backup method

. This means putting together different backup and recovery procedures, going according to the data's level of importance. We all have data that isn't as important, at least compared to other pieces of information. This is why it is helpful to know the different levels so you can set up the proper recovery method for your databases. You must also be aware of all of the options and know the advantages and disadvantages of using each one. Some of the recovery methods like Enterprise Manager, Maintenance Plan Wizard or a program with T-SQL commands will all use configuration to backup and restore data.

When you use the database portion of your SQL backup method, it saves a full copy of the entire database. This means once you set up the backup process, it will take a complete snapshot of all of the data on each of the databases. The transaction option creates a backup of the active transaction log. These backups work together with the database backup, allowing you to recover transactions that have taken place since the last database backup. If you take a variety of successful logs, you will find that each one creates an entirely new set of transactions since the last log backup.

The better copies you have, the more confidence there is in the system. However, there are times when something won't work quite as planned and the backup is corrupted or damaged. This is why many people suggest making a variety of copies, often in different formats, although make sure to save them in different spots. When you only have to backup a certain area, it is nice to be able to use one option over another.
