Windows has a feature of Reset disk to protect user accounts in the event that the user forgets the password. The Forgotten Password Wizard lets user create a password reset disk that can be used to recover user account and personalized computer settings if a user forgets his password. Thus, if the user forgets his or her password, the password can be reset using the password reset disk and the user will be able to access the local user account again. The password reset disk contains encrypted version of your password in a file called userkey.psw. If you change your password, the password reset disk will be useless and you have to create a new password reset disk to be able to use it. You should keep this password reset disk in a safe place otherwise anyone can access your computer using this reset disk.
To log in to your system using password reset disk, follow the steps given below:
On the Windows XP logon screen, click the user name that you have to use. When you press ENTER without entering any password in Type your password box or click the right-arrow button, You will be prompted t o either enter correct password or to use your password reset disk.
Click use your password reset disk. The Password Reset Wizard starts which permits you to create a new password for your user account.
Click Next.
After inserting the password reset disk into drive A, click Next.
Type a new password box appears. Type a new password in this box.
You need to type the same password in the Type the password again to confirm box.
In the Type a new password hint box, you can type a hint to remind you of your password if you forget the new password.
Click Next, and then click Finish. You return to the Windows XP logon screen.
Now you can type your new password in the Type your password box, and then click the right-arrow button to log on to the computer.
