The Audi A4 is the predecessor of the Audi 80 a compact executive vehicle marketed in the same class as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C Class.

The first of the Audi A4s went in to production in 1994, using the VW Passat platform as a base, it was front engine and front wheel drive. There were a few model variants available including the Avant and Audi's flagship Quattro versions.

The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car.

Audi decided to also debut their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the 1st generation Audi A4, based on the gearbox Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter, but it offers the driver fully automatic operation, or manual selection of the gear ratios.

The face lifted Audi A4 came out in 1998, this new Audi A4 had a new engine, a diesel, 2.5litre V6 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine with 150PS (110kW; 148bhp), this meant the price of the previous model used Audi A4 in Surrey were very attractive.
