Renault have been producing the Espace since 1984, it is now in its fourth generation of production. The Espace is often cited as the first MPV in the world, something which Renault has never denied, in fact they encourage this notion.
The Espace's design was originally conceived by a British designer in the 1970s, Fergus Pollock, who was working for Chrysler UK at their design centre at Whitley. The Espace was originally going to be sold as a Talbot, and be a replacement for the Matra Rancho leisure activity vehicle. Early prototypes used Simca parts, and hence featured a grille similar to that of the Simca 1307.
Building on its success, the Espace was given a face lift in 1988 with most of the Talbot/Simca design and parts being replaced by equivalent Renault parts, though the chassis and mechanical components of the car remained largely unchanged.
In 1991 the Espace generation 2 was released, it adopted the Renault family look to replace the Talbot-themed styling of the original. The 1991 release was essentially a re-skin of the original car, with a new dashboard and other interior improvements but the chassis was essentially unchanged.
The third generation of the Espace arrived in 1997 and the long wheelbase Grand Espace appeared the following year, its most unique feature being the radical futuristic interior it had a centrally-mounted digital speedometer.
The current Renault Espace is 90% recyclable, it arrived in 2003 and was the first Espace designed by Renault and Matra, but built by Renault. For a
