Consider the type and size of the guitar

There are essentially four different types of guitars: classic, electric, acoustic, and acoustic/electric. Classic guitars comprise the traditional type of guitars with wider necks that allow for more comfortable guitar fingerstyle playing. Electric guitars are used with some amplification, while acoustic guitars may be used without amps. These two have distinct sounds that widely vary. Finally, acoustic/electric guitars may be used with and without amps and are thus more versatile if you want to get the advantages of both types. In addition, if you have smaller hands, then you might want to get a 1/2 or 3/4 size guitar. These guitars, however, are usually playable by either right handed or left handed guitar players.

Try it and check out the way it feels in your hands

A guitar is best bought when you have had the chance to feel and hear it for yourself. One good way of doing so is to visit a local shop. Meanwhile, you should also check if the strings are too fhigh or low against the frteboard, to prevent a buzzing sound especially in electric guitars used with amps.

Consider the musical genres you like to listen to

If you prefer blues over classical music or would rather play hard rock music than jazz, then your musical preference can play a great role in considering the type of guitar you should get. For example, Blues, Classical Rock, and Metal enthusiasts might want to buy an electric or classic guitar as these are the most suitable types for their genres. Those who favour bluegrass, country or folk music, may be partial to acoustic steel string or acoustic/electric guitars. Classical music enthusiasts will naturally go for acoustic guitars as this is what the genre calls for. Those who are fans of guitar fingerstyle playing will enjoy acoustic, acoustic/electric, and classic electric guitars.
