Uses And Types Of Emergency Vehicle Lights

Emergency vehicle lights, whether they are on a police vehicle

, ambulance, or a private vehicle, serve roughly the same purposes. Every emergency vehicle light is used for communicating to the other drivers on the road any one of the following four messages - A request for the way to be cleared for the vehicle with the flashing emergency lights on it, because it needs to go faster than other vehicles to tackle some emergency situation.

4.A signal to the vehicle in front to pull over to the side because the law enforcement agents in the car with the flashing lights need to communicate with the driver.

5.A request to other vehicles to move cautiously, as when used by parked vehicles, or vehicles moving slower than the normal traffic.

6.To direct traffic in different directions of the vehicle with the emergency vehicle light, as done by using directional arrow light sticks which flash in a sequence.

Whatever the purpose for which emergency lights are used, the effect is brought about by the intensity of the light, and the flashing pattern used to project it. LED lights, information matrix signs, and rotating lights are used for emergency vehicle lighting.

Of the different types of lighting used as emergency vehicle lights, the rage of the times is LED lights. LED, or light emitting diodes, where light is produced by what is known as electroluminescence, produce very bright lights and have a wide range colors at its disposal and these have made it a popular choice for emergency vehicle lighting. Another aspect that makes LED lights popular is its incredibly long life. In most instances an LED bulb lasts longer than the vehicle on which it is used. Besides these, the energy consumption rate of LED lights is also very low.

LED lights are used as beacons of light bars. Since color is a normal part of LED lights, the dome used on an LED emergency vehicle lights will be transparent. Motorist information matrix signs are another form of emergency vehicle lighting. Here light sources like LED or strobe is used to spell out words or phrases to warn other vehicles approaching from behind. Some information matrix signs allow only pre-programmed messages like 'caution', 'go slow', or 'police' while there are others that allow users to display different types of messages.

In rotating lights, or beacons, which is another form of emergency vehicle lights, a curved mirror is rotated circling one or more light sources. The light source may be halogen bulbs or LED bulbs. Since rotation creates a circular beam of light, the flashing effect necessary for an emergency vehicle light is effectively achieved this way. To prevent interference in rotation, and to protect the different component parts of the rotating entity, a plastic dome covers the entire unit.

In some rotating emergency vehicle lights, the plastic dome will be colored, while in others the dome will be clear but the light may be colored. The light within the dome may be LED or other lights like halogen. Where the inner light bulbs are not LED, colored lenses are used to give the color effect while in LED the color will be a property of the bulb itself.
