Using A Heater Wisely this Winter And Save Costs

As the months get cooler it is tempting to simply crank up the heater accordingly, to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the whole house. While this is good for a short term solution, by the time you get your energy bill, you will be looking for an alternative and wished you would have found one sooner.

To avoid having a huge gas/electricity bill this Winter make sure you have a strategy to heat your home wisely and to make sure the heat isn't escaping out almost as soon as it comes from the heater.

Insulation makes a huge difference to your home and needn't require a huge investment. While installing ceiling and wall insulation would be the most effective form of insulation it is harder to do in old houses. Insulation can also take the form of rugs, carpets and curtains.

A huge amount of cold air can come through glass windows and up through bare floors. Windows that are not double glazed feel cold to the touch when it is cold outside and alot of heat leaks out that way, while cold air comes in. By installing a layer over the window you can create a layer of warm air to keep the cold out and the warmth in. This layer can be a thick curtain and/or blinds.

Of course blocking the windows off creates a dark room so make sure you allow yourself some sunlight during the day, and remember to clock them off at night when the chill sets in. To combat the dark you can also install an electric fireplace heater which replicates the warm glow of a real fire as well as heats the room effectively.

There are small models available that can be moved from room to room or even ones that affix straight onto a wall. Smaller heaters allow you to focus and contain the heat in one area, instead of trying to heat the whole house. This can mean that during the day you heat the areas you live in most, like the kitchen, living and office areas. In the night you can heat the bedrooms and block off the other areas so heat isn't wasted. Make sure you have enough fresh air though!

Another way you can heat proof your home is by placing rugs and temporary carpeting on bare floors. Having a large rug or a pre-fitted carpet stored away in the warmer months allows you to enjoy the cool floor in Summer but then the warmth of an extra layer underfoot in Winter. Much like the curtains, carpet traps a layer of air in between the floor and the rug, keeping the warm air inside longer.

Keeping your house warm this winter can be achieved if you take the time to make a few small changes. If you don't rely on heating the whole house you will notice the difference when your energy bill arrives in a few months.
