Using A Playstation 3 As A Media Player

The playstation 3 is a very versatile machine capable of many things other than games

. You can use it to watch catch up tv and stream media from various sources. This can be streamed from local and online sources.

Catch up tv is a relatively modern invention. The first major one was the bbc iplayer which has proved a huge hit, but having to watch tv on your PC is not really ideal. After all it is hardly watching it on the big screen. There are options, such as running cables around your house or moving your laptop next to your tv but it is not ideal. Thankfully along has come the PS3 and now you can use the iplayer, itv player and watch 4od though your ps3 without having to faff about with cables. All you do is browse the list of available programs and click play. What could be easier.

Streaming media is the other PS3 great plus point. You can stream data from your own network or use various online sources to provide you a wealth of media.

You can now purchase NAS drives relatively cheaply. This is a network area storage, essentially it is a hard drive that is attached to your network and is usually left on all the time. This allows you to see it as a regular drive from your computer and your ps3. Any films, music and photos can be easily stored here and then displayed onto your big screen using your ps3.

Finally there is streaming off the internet. The most recent type is video streaming. Using your ps3 you can now browse a complete list of films and select what you would like to watch. This is then streamed directly to your ps3, practically instantly, and providing you have a good internet connection, you need never visit the video store again. Can you imagine being bored at home and thinking I fancy watching a film. Well within a couple of minutes you can be watching it. But you might still need to head out for some popcorn!

Online streaming is dependent upon your internet connection and the cheaper solutions are not always suitable for streaming as many will throttle streamed content.

A final point about the ps3. When it was first released streaming films and watching catch up tv wasn't available and was just a distant idea. The ps3 is constantly evolving to take into account future ideas, so a purchase now can mean great future support.
