Using A Tutor To Learn A Foreign Language

Hopefully you already know some native speakers

, which may be why you are learning this particular foreign language in the first place. You don't have to meet in person. Telephone calls and emails are fine. If you don't know a native speaker, you can look into advertising in a newspaper or store targeted to the native speakers of your target language. You don't have to pay someone. Many native speakers may be more than happy to help. So, how should you go about learning from your tutor?

Recording: get an MP3 player with a recording feature (such as the Sansa Clip) and ask your tutor if you may record them either in person or over the phone. Have them say a few short sentences very slowly. Ask them what each one means. Try to master each one. Make sure you understand all of the words and try to understand the grammar. For example, you should try to understand how plurals are formed, tenses, adjectives, etc.

Grammar: If you are having trouble understanding how verb tenses or other aspects of grammar work, ask your tutor. Hopefully they will be able to make up for the lack of a good introductory grammar book. Ask your tutor to help you with the grammatical concepts listed here: http://languagetips.info/foreign_language_grammar.html

Hopefully, your tutor will be able to give you a basic understanding of each concept listed. Then you can use your grammar book for more in-depth information on each concept.

Vocabulary and Pronunciation: Ask your tutor to translate words and simple phrases that you would like to learn. It is a good idea to record these to practice the pronunciation.

Conversation Practice: Once you have advanced enough to say some simple sentences, you can start doing some conversation practice. It will be helpful to record the conversations at first.
