Using Biometrics In Access Control Systems
What is Biometrics? And how can you use it in your access control system
? Let me answer these questions for you :)
What is Access Control System?
Access control system is a kind of security system, where the authority of accessing protected information is given by the manager or specific authority. It limits the number of the allowed people to access private information.
What is Biometrics?
Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring and analyzing biological data. In information technology, biometrics refers to technologies that measure and analyze human body characteristics, such as DNA, fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, voice patterns, facial patterns and hand measurements, for authentication purposes.
Imagine combining both!!!!!
So, if you are planning to upgrade your access control system or put in an entirely new system, there are many reasons to consider biometrics as the solution of choice. Biometrics is more accurate, they save money and they are easy to use. Its no surprise that more organizations are using biometrics at the front end.
Our company doesnt need more protection. For those using cards, biometrics adds another layer of protection. For instance, once a badge is lost or canceled, it remains alive and active in the access control system from the time the badge is misplaced or deleted to the time that it is subsequently reported. By adding a biometric to the access control system, a badge alone cannot be used to gain access.
Nobody uses biometrics. North American Government Biometrics Markets reports that biometrics sales are estimated to reach $9.5 billion by 2014. Just about every major national government uses them, as do nuclear power plants and other high security locations.
After all, if the goal of an access control system is to control where people -- not credentials -- can and cannot go, then only a biometric device truly provides this capability to the end user.
A system designed to identify a person compares a biometric presented by a person against all biometric samples stored in the database. The one-to-many system identifies the person if the presented biometric matches one of the many samples on file. This type of system is used by the police to identify criminals and by governments to identify qualified recipients for benefit programs and registration systems for voting and licensing drivers. This is the type of system we typically see on TV crime shows.
The verification process, however, involves a one-to-one search. A live biometric presented by the user is compared to a stored sample, previously given by that person during enrollment, and the match is confirmed. With this type of system, the user must be present. Without the person, the police can do nothing.
Biometrics spread germs. Hand geometry readers use an advanced antimicrobial technology to inhibit the growth of bacteria on their platens, where the user rests her hand. A special silver-based agent is embedded into the materials used to produce the platen of the biometric hand geometry units, providing a hygienic finish that resists bacterial degradation.
