Using ESL Writing Games To Make Your Lessons Interactive And Exciting

All schools in the United States have to improve the English proficiency of children who do not have English as a primary language. This is done through ESL programs that teach children English as a Second language. One of the fun ways a presenter of such a program will be able to keep the children interested and excited about learning is by using ESL writing games. The following games are flexible, with varying degrees of difficulty, keep students interested, and involved. You will have to do a bit of preparation when you first present the games, but after that, you have a working model.

The code breaker- Children love secrets. When they arrive in the class give them each a wrapped sweet or biscuit. Wrap these in bright colors and include a piece of paper with five short sentences in code. You can use anything: what is your name, how old are you, where do you live, what is your favorite fruit, what color is your hair?

Use an easy code. For example - move on one letter in the alphabet (A becomes B; hence cat is coded as dbu). Once their grasp of figures and the alphabet improves you can use the figures one to twenty six to represent A to Z (1 is A and 26 is Z, so the word what is coded as 23 8 1 20). Prepare a few sentences that have not been printed on their paper and show them how to use the code. Remind them of all the letters of the alphabet and either have a poster prominently on the blackboard or write them out or use this as an opportunity to get each child actively involved and let them take turns to write the alphabet characters before the start the game. You can even use it as part of a history lesson in which you can teach them about how code breaking was used in the world wars to spy on enemies.

You can have prizes for the first three children who finish all the sentences correctly. Alternatively, if you have children that are much slower than others are you can pre-group the class into teams of three who can work together.

The alphabet game - Most of us have played this game at some stage. In this game, the students are asked to write down names of types of animals, food or city and town names starting with a particular alphabet letter.

At the end of a school day, ask the children to choose some categories, which you can write on the board and then tell them that you will explain the game the next day. That will give you the opportunity to choose the most appropriate categories. Prepare a sheet with no more than five categories on a grid with five blocks next to each in which they can write their answers under each alphabet character. Give each child a printed page when you start the game.

Make the game interactive and place ping-pong balls with alphabet characters in a bag decorated with letters. Ask your more withdrawn students to draw one from the bag at a time and then the whole class can write down their answers. You may want to leave out difficult characters such as X, Y, Z and if your class is only starting leave out confusing sounding letters such a C and K and introduce them later in the year once their vocabulary and spelling skills have improved.

You can vary the degree of difficulty depending on the age of the students by increasing the length of the sentences in the first game or making up teams in the second game to see which team can write down the most words under a particular letter in a timed session. Make your ESL writing games exciting and they will help your students to learn whilst enjoying themselves.
