Using Led Lighting In Your Home
With the skyrocketing costs we have all been plagued with over the last few years
- and with no indication this trend will reverse course - many millions of people all across the country are looking for ways to save money on a monthly basis. For this reason, among others, a common change people make in their homes involves switching their traditional incandescent light-bulbs out in favor of newer, more efficient technology.
Previously, this change typically involved replacing your incandescents with compact fluorescent light-bulbs (CFL), which help save both energy and money on the electric bill. However, there is something better than both incandescent bulbs and the compact fluorescent: LED lights. LED (light emitting diode) technology has been around for decades and have been used in a number of applications. It has only been within the last several years that LED light fixtures have been revamped for home usage.
This is great news for homeowners who are looking to not only save on their energy usage to help protect the planet, but save a considerable amount of money on their energy bills as well. LED light fixtures will accomplish both of these more efficiently and safely than previous lighting technology. For example, while compact fluorescent light bulbs last longer than incandescent bulbs, LEDs last 10 times longer than the best CFL. Additionally, LEDs only use a minuscule 2 - 10 watts of electricity, they reduce energy consumption considerably while still providing a quality light source with plenty of light to see by.
As you can see, by design, LED light fixtures cut down considerably on your energy usage, but they can also be safer than traditional lighting sources, providing greater peace of mind as a homeowner. Take for example incandescent lights, that use filaments to generate light. These get extremely hot and also break easily. Flourescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, that can create a clean-up hazzard when a bulb breaks. LED lights are solid and do not have filaments; this means that they are more durable and will not break as easily as traditional bulbs. Plus, LED lights do not contain any mercury, so if they do break, you will not be faced with that hazard. In addition, LED lights produce very little heat. This is a great safety feature because they can not accidentally set something on fire or burn your hand - or that of a curious little one - if they are accidentally touched.
There are many great reasons why you should switch your home lighting systems to include LED light fixtures and bulbs, all of which make sense for your bottom line and the planet on which we live.
