Using Perforated Paper to Produce Customized Church Bulletins

While pre-printed church bulletins are available at your local Christian retailer, many churches prefer to design their own. And why not? This allows them to personalize the document with their logo, a picture representing the current sermon series, their mission statement, contact information, etc. But many places of worship like to include a tear-off sheet where individuals can register their attendance, request information, take sermon notes, or specify prayer requests. The expense as well as extra time involved in a machine to perforate pages for this purpose is something most churches cannot afford. Perforated paper is a cost-effective way to accomplish customized bulletins without added costs. Here's how.

First, consider the set up of your bulletin. How large do you want the tear off sheet to be? How about the rest of the document? Two sizes of perforated paper will work for this purpose. Standard letter sheets can have panels that are 3", 3-1/2", 3-5/8", or 3-2/3" wide. This will practically give you a tri-fold bulletin with one panel easily detaching. Legal size pages may work better for bulletins. With perforations either 3" or 3.5" from the bottom, a standard 8.5" by 11" area is left for announcements, contact information, and other data. Either size will work; it's up to you to decide which is better for your needs.

Next you'll want to decide what paper weight you'll need. Legal sheets mainly come in 24lb bond weight. This slightly thicker paper will help to prevent bleeding and is a sturdier cover weight for bulletins. It will also allow for better double sided printing; you'll be less likely to see through to what's on the reverse side. Letter sheets come in both 20lb and 24lb bond weights. Twenty pound bond paper is lighter and often more cost-effective but may work better for inserts rather than the actual bulletin.

Finally, make sure you purchase paper guaranteed to smoothly run through your printer or copier. Cheaply produced paper has the likelihood of jamming; the perforations can catch on the the machine's parts and cause errors. These waste time and money. High quality paper is run through rollers and then sealed in moisture resistant reams to eliminate curling. The result is smooth paper that will glide through your copier or printer without jamming.

Now comes the fun part. Design a cover that represents your church. Maybe you have a logo specific to your congregation. Or maybe there's a picture that effectively illustrates your current sermon series. Since you're now designing your own bulletin, you can tailor the contents to the needs of your church. If the tear off panel doesn't work for sermon notes, it can be a registration card or prayer request sheet. And you have the added benefit of being able to change the design as needed.

Now that you know how easy and convenient making your own bulletins can be when you use perforated paper, can you imagine still using mass-produced pre-printed ones? We didn't think so. So get some perforated paper today and start designing!
